Good morning. Sunday started well. The Rams were down to a 3.2% win probability in Philadelphia, made a goal-line stand, and Matthew Stafford led his 40th career fourth-quarter comeback. Then the Raiders lost their first game to Patrick Mahomes, the Padres lost again in Milwaukee, and the Dodgers lost at home. Today is a travel day for both baseball teams before Game 3s on Tuesday. The Lakers play a preseason game against Sacramento tonight. Let’s get into it.

⚾ HIT THE ROOF
The Padres were three outs from losing Game 1 when Ty France hit a ball 105.3 mph down the left-field line. It would have been a home run in Houston, according to Baseball Savant. In Milwaukee, it hit the roof.
American Family Field’s ground rules say a ball that hits the roof in fair territory stays in play. Jackson Chourio caught it on the warning track, and crew chief Alfonso Márquez’s crew upheld the out. Brady Charette has France’s reaction.
“You would think with all the technology and everything we have now, you’d be able to make a clear call on that,” France said. “That shouldn’t be an out.”
Game 2 hurt more. Michael King gave the Padres what they needed: five-plus innings, one run, no walks, six strikeouts. France drove in runs in the first and seventh. Craig Stammen sent Mason Miller out for the ninth looking for his second six-out save. Miller walked two straight batters, a fly ball loaded the bases, and Chourio lined a full-count fastball up the middle for a two-run single. Brewers 4, Padres 3. Miller threw a career-high 40 pitches.
Eric Evelhoch has the numbers: two one-run losses, Chourio central to both, and San Diego coming home down 0-2. Game 3 is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Petco Park on FS1, Nick Pivetta vs. Dustin May. Lose, and the season is over.
The Dodgers’ problem is different. Six of their seven runs in the series have come on home runs. Freddie Freeman homered in the fourth Sunday and Max Muncy homered with two outs in the ninth. In between, Michael Harris II tripled and scored on a Kris Bubic wild pitch, then doubled in another run, and Atlanta won 3-2. Blake Snell walked five in 3⅔ innings. Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-4 and struck out chasing pitches out of the zone.
“Gotta find a way to score some runs without hitting a home run,” Freeman said. “That’s our biggest thing right now.”
The series moves to Atlanta for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Chris Sale starts Game 3 for the Braves.

🏈 THE RAMS FIND THE SUN
With 8:17 left in Philadelphia, the Rams’ win probability was 3.2%. Eric Lambkins II writes that the defense held at the goal line, and the offense took it from there.
On the last two drives, Stafford went 12-of-15 for 140 yards — the 40th fourth-quarter comeback of his career. Kyren Williams ran for two touchdowns and had 10 catches, 147 yards from scrimmage on 26 touches. Puka Nacua, back from his hip injury, caught 9 of 12 targets for 125 yards, including the key late catches over Riq Woolen. Philadelphia had won four straight against the Rams. Aaron Donald stayed home with a sore back.
Stafford was honest about how messy it was. “I don’t ever want to turn the ball over,” he said. “Any way you can shoot yourself in the foot, we were doing it.”
A week after giving away a 16-0 lead in Denver, they won a game they had no business winning. At 2-2, it’s a start.
“Guys, we’re capable,” Sean McVay said. “You got to believe and we got to just string good plays together.”

🏈 MAHOMES BEING MAHOMES
The Raiders’ defense came in leading the NFL in takeaways. Patrick Mahomes still found the plays he needed. Steve Carp writes that on third-and-10 in the first quarter, Mahomes hit Xavier Worthy for 41 yards to set up a touchdown pass to Tyquan Thornton. In the fourth quarter, on third-and-5, he found Thornton for 55 yards. Kansas City won 30-27 and is 4-0. The Raiders are 3-1.
“I don’t expect him to do that,” Andy Reid said. “But I do trust him when the football is in his hands.”
The teams meet again in early January at Arrowhead.
