Good morning, and welcome to the best Saturday of the year so far. Nine events on the schedule across our three markets, starting at 12:30 with USC at Rutgers and ending with Purdue at UCLA under the lights at the Rose Bowl. In between: two MLS matches, two baseball games that matter, a Wave home date, San Diego State at home, and a Kings-Knights preseason game in Ontario that puts two of our markets on the same sheet of ice. Let’s get into it.

🏈 He practiced. Donald took reps Thursday; McVay says the decision is his — Eric Lambkins II at Rams Village.
⚾ Four. The Padres’ magic number is down to four and they are tied atop the wild card — Armando Dueñas at Petco Park.

🏈 THE FLIGHT HOME
Lambkins’s piece is built around sixteen hours over the Pacific, and the detail that makes it is what the Rams did with them. They watched the tape on the plane — the 44 percent pressure rate on Matthew Stafford, the fourth-and-inches that flipped the game, the zero-tackle line that turned Myles Garrett into a ghost.
“You flip the tape on, you watch the Giants, they jump off the screen at you,” Stafford said. “Good, bad, and different, move on to the next.”
Seven points in Melbourne was the fewest in any of Stafford’s 75 starts as a Ram. That is the number that explains the mood.
McVay’s instruction for the week was to stop holding a funeral for it. “I want to see us be present right now and move forward,” he said. “That game is so far… it’s almost like you try to do the ‘Men in Black’ thing where you say, ‘Hey, I don’t remember what happened.’ We’re not playing in Australia ever again, I hope.”
Davante Adams declined the excuse everyone was handing him. “We can sit here and try to make excuses and say it’s because of the flight all we want. But at the end of the day, I didn’t feel tired.” And later, the line of the piece: “You’re a fool if you think that that’s what it’s going to look like every single week.”
Then the news. Aaron Donald practiced Thursday. He has not played a snap since unretiring, and he has been week-to-week since McVay ruled him out of the opener.
“We’ll see how this week goes,” McVay said. “He’s obviously chomping at the bit. If he says he’s ready to go, then we’ll be excited to see him rock.”
On Garrett, who had knee surgery and is on injured reserve for at least four games: “He’s feeling good. You already see he had crutches yesterday and then he was walking without crutches today. He’s like Wolverine, healing fast.” Fast, but not fast enough for Monday.
What’s waiting. The Giants brought a pass rush to Week 1 — Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and Abdul Carter in waves, Arvell Reese in the middle. Stafford has seen the film. “They really get after it. We have to match that or exceed that energy and that edge.”

The Padres are now playing for seeding, not survival.
Armando Dueñas has them down a run early to Miami before a six-run fifth — five hits and three runs off Cade Gibson and Tyler Zuber, capped by Ty France driving a three-run homer into the second basket of the Western Metal Supply Co. building. It was France’s 21st of the year, a career high, from a San Diego State product on the night before his alma mater plays at home.
“It’s been a journey to get to this point in my career,” France said. “It’s nice to get over that one.”
Jackson Merrill added his 26th in the eighth. Samad Taylor drove in another. Nick Pivetta had the five-run cushion he needed.
And then the out-of-town scoreboard did the rest. Philadelphia lost. Chicago lost. Arizona lost a third straight, to the Yankees. San Diego is now tied with the Cubs and Phillies atop the National League wild card standings and five games clear of the Diamondbacks with eight to play. The magic number is four.
They are 35-16 since July 24 — the best record in baseball over that stretch — and have won 11 of 12.
“It would have been really easy to be satisfied after a few of these games and a few of these sweeps, to take a game off, and we just haven’t taken any of the games off,” Craig Stammen said.
Casey Mize faces Eury Pérez tonight. They could be celebrating by Sunday.

This is the day the calendar has been building toward.
College football, three ways. USC is 3-0 and opens Big Ten play at Rutgers at 12:30 on CBS, the first road test of the schedule that decides the season. San Diego State hosts James Madison at 7 on the CW. And Purdue visits UCLA at 8 on BTN, with the Bruins 2-1 and students getting in free at the Rose Bowl — the admission change Anthony Arroyo reported this week.
Two of ours on the same ice. The Golden Knights and Kings meet in preseason at 6 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, on ABTV. A Las Vegas team and a Los Angeles team, playing in the Inland Empire, in the same week both opened camp. There are not many outlets that cover both ends of that.
Soccer, twice. LAFC at San Jose at 4:30 and the Galaxy at Minnesota at 5:30, both on Apple TV.
And the pennant race. Miami at San Diego at 5:40 with a magic number of four, and the Giants at Dodger Stadium at 6:10.
📌 AROUND THE MARKETS
Still unbeaten at home. Sebastian Sanchez was at Snapdragon as the Wave shut out Kansas City 2-0 and extended a home unbeaten run that has quietly become one of the better stories in the NWSL.
A promise from the rookie. Fredo Cervantes has Josue De Paula saying he intends to “shut a lot of people up” with his defense — a 21-year-old who skipped Triple-A entirely, responding to the scouting reports.
A wasted start. Jack Janes writes that Rodriguez gave the Angels a solid outing and got nothing for it; Minnesota won 3-0.
Signed, signed, waived. Carlos Yakimowich reports the Lakers added Meechie Johnson and Chase Ross and waived Anton Watson — the same Anton Watson they had added to the camp roster a day earlier. Training camp arithmetic is unsentimental.
