Good morning. UCLA is 9-0 for the first time since 1998. The Bruins were tied with Minnesota in the fourth quarter before Ty Dieffenbach hit Aiden Mizell for 75-yard touchdowns on back-to-back possessions, and they won 34-20. It was a rough Saturday for local soccer: the Galaxy lost at Real Salt Lake and missed the playoffs, San Diego FC lost its finale, LAFC lost at Seattle but goes in as the West’s No. 6 seed, and Angel City’s season ended on a penalty in extra time in Kansas City. The Kings fell behind Pittsburgh 3-0 in the first period and lost 5-2, and UNLV football lost to Wyoming. Today: the Rams are at Washington at 10, the Chargers and Raiders play at 1:05, and the Ducks debut their Hometown Remix jerseys against Pittsburgh. Let’s get into it.

🏈 NINE AND OH
With about 13 minutes left at Minnesota, the score was tied at 17. Then Ty Dieffenbach found Aiden Mizell for a 75-yard touchdown with 12:41 left. Minnesota answered with a field goal, and on the very next snap Dieffenbach and Mizell did it again from 75 yards out. Mateen Bhaghani added a field goal, and UCLA won 34-20.
Brady Charette writes that Mizell had 150 receiving yards in the fourth quarter alone, his first 100-yard, multi-touchdown game in four seasons. Before Saturday he had seven catches all year. “He’s a burner, man. He’s fast. Like, he’s really fast,” Dieffenbach said. “It felt great,” Mizell said. “I was tweaking out.” Dieffenbach, who took over after Nico Iamaleava’s midseason injury, threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns, his first 300-yard game. UCLA ran for 163 more.
It’s UCLA’s first 9-0 start since 1998, and the Bruins are one of two unbeaten FBS teams left. Jack Haslett writes that this is the game that should end the talk about UCLA’s easy schedule. “We battled the entire time and never wavered,” Bob Chesney said.

⚽ DECISION DAY
The Galaxy didn’t meet the moment. A win at Real Salt Lake would have put them in the playoffs. Instead RSL scored twice in the first 13 minutes, and the Galaxy’s only goal came on an own goal off a Hirving Lozano cross. They didn’t put a shot on target. Rob Jalon writes that the Galaxy finished 11th in the West and missed the playoffs for the second straight year, their fourth time in six seasons. “They came out ready tonight, and they were flying, and we didn’t meet the moment,” Greg Vanney said.
LAFC backed into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed. Seattle won 2-1, with Eddie Segura heading in LAFC’s only goal in the 82nd minute. LAFC finished 12-11-11 and opens against St. Louis City. Holdenn Graff writes that Jacob Shaffelburg went to the hospital after a hard hit and may have broken ribs, and Hugo Lloris was out with a back injury. Denis Bouanga finished with 18 goals.
San Diego FC’s season is over. André Luiz scored on a 76th-minute penalty, and Sporting Kansas City won 1-0. SDFC finished 9-14-11. “It’s not the season any of us wanted,” Mikey Varas said. “I’m most disappointed with letting the fans down.” Anders Dreyer led the club with 15 goals and 13 assists.
Angel City went out in extra time. After 90 scoreless minutes in the NWSL quarterfinals, Michelle Cooper scored on a penalty in the 96th minute, and the Kansas City Current won 1-0. Angelina Anderson made five saves. “I said going into the playoffs that just making it wasn’t enough,” captain Sarah Gorden said. With the Wave also out, neither local NWSL team reached the semifinals.

🏒 A ROUGH NIGHT, A FEW GOOD ONES
The Kings lost it in the first period. Tommy Novak scored twice in the first five minutes, and Pittsburgh led 3-0. Corey Perry and Alex Laferriere, on the power play, got two back, but a second Laferriere goal was overturned on an offside challenge, and Sidney Crosby finished it with an empty-netter. The Kings outshot Pittsburgh 28-19. “We didn’t answer their pace, we didn’t answer their compete, and therefore they capitalized,” Peter Laviolette said. The Kings are 5-8-2.
UNLV football lost control of its race. Wyoming ran for 351 yards and won 41-35 at Allegiant Stadium. Derek Hegna writes that UNLV has allowed more than 1,000 rushing yards in its last three games and no longer controls its path to the Mountain West title game. “It’s my job to fix it because it’s not very good,” Dan Mullen said. Steve Carp writes that the loss showed UNLV’s problems on both sides of the ball. The Rebels need one more win for bowl eligibility; New Mexico is next.
Better news on the court. UNLV’s men are 2-0 after Cam Miles scored a career-high 20 in an 88-79 win over Samford. San Diego State is 2-0 after beating Colorado 77-66 in the first Bill Walton Classic, with Chance Gladden scoring 20 on 5-of-6 shooting. And Hawaii football won 17-14 at UTEP in its first game since June Jones died, as Micah Alejado threw for 303 yards.
