Ohtani joins the 300 club but the Dodgers can’t hold on
Shohei Ohtani becomes the first Japanese-born player to reach 300 career home runs, only for a late defensive meltdown to hand Colorado a 4-3 win at Dodger Stadium.
Good morning! History at Chavez Ravine: Shohei Ohtani joined the 300-homer club, though the Dodgers couldn’t make it stick. The Padres snapped their skid, the Angels dropped a seventh straight, and the WNBA named its All-Stars — with both the Aces and Sparks represented. No World Cup today; the quarterfinals resume Thursday, with Spain-Belgium coming to SoFi on Friday. Let’s get into it.

⚾ OHTANI JOINS THE 300 CLUB
He led off the bottom of the first with a 409-foot line drive off Colorado’s Michael Lorenzen — his 20th homer of the season and the 300th of his career. With it, Shohei Ohtani became the first Japanese-born player to reach 300 home runs and the 170th member of the club, getting there in the fifth-fewest games in Major League history. Justin Wrobleski backed the milestone with seven innings of one-run ball and nine strikeouts, but an eighth-inning defensive meltdown undid all of it, and the Rockies slipped out of Dodger Stadium with a 4-3 win. History on an otherwise forgettable night.
